Founded by director, producer, writer, English and theatre educator Marisa Stefatos, Evicted Victorius explores the places where the ancient and contemporary meet—where inherited stories can be questioned, reimagined, and made newly alive.
Our work moves between classical and contemporary theatre, adaptation and translation, devised performance, music, education, and culturally engaged storytelling.
At the center of the work is a question:
What happens when we return to an old story and allow a different voice to speak?

The Isle of Slaves, Revisited
Directed, translated and adapted by Marisa Stefatos
After L’Île des esclaves by Pierre de Marivaux
Presented at the FRIGID Fringe Festival in New York, The Isle of Slaves, Revisited returns to Marivaux’s radical 18th-century comedy about masters and servants whose positions are suddenly reversed.
On Marivaux’s strange island, the social order is temporarily overturned. Servants become masters. Masters are forced to confront the people they have controlled. Identity becomes performance, power becomes unstable, and comedy becomes a means of telling uncomfortable truths.
This new adaptation explores Marivaux’s marivaudage—his intricate play between language, desire, identity, and power—through a contemporary theatrical lens.
At once playful and unsettling, The Isle of Slaves, Revisited asks what happens when those accustomed to being seen are forced to look—and those accustomed to silence are finally allowed to speak.
ABOUT MARISA STEFATOS

Marisa Stefatos is a New York-based theatre director, producer, writer, composer, and educator specializing in English language, literature, mythology, and theatre. Her interdisciplinary work spans classical and contemporary theatre, adaptation, devised performance, immersive theatre, music, and arts education
An experienced English-language and arts educator, Marisa currently teaches English at New Dawn Charter High School in Queens, New York. Her teaching emphasizes literary analysis, creative expression, critical thinking, and helping multilingual students discover and develop their individual voices
For more than two decades, she has developed theatrical work centered on literature, mythology, cultural identity, and the transformation of classical texts for contemporary audiences.
Marisa holds a Master of Arts in Communication from New York University’s Steinhardt School and a Bachelor of Arts in English and Theater with a minor in French from NYU’s Gallatin School of Individualized Study. Her professional experience includes arts leadership, theatre direction, curriculum development, and teaching across educational and cultural settings.
As a theatre maker and writer, she reimagines classical and literary works through contemporary perspectives, often exploring mythology, women’s voices, cultural memory, and the intersection of fate and free will. Her work includes The Isle of Slaves, Revisited, alongside the development of original interdisciplinary theatrical projects.
Through Evicted Victorius Productions, Marisa brings together her commitment to literature, education, and performance, creating opportunities for artistic inquiry, cross-cultural dialogue, and imaginative expression.
Her directing and producing work has included productions and projects such as Antigone, Rhesos, Jean Cocteau’s The Infernal Machine, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Marivaux’s La Dispute and The Isle of Slaves Revisited, Vampyre’s Lair, and Upstander Bystander: From Camp to Camp.
As Artistic Director of the Greek Festival at The Dalton School, Marisa directed, developed, and produced original and adapted theatrical work with young performers, drawing upon Greek mythology, history, literature, music, and contemporary storytelling.Her work has also included composing original music for theatrical productions.
Her recent educational directing work includes Willy Wonka Jr. at A. Fantis School.
Most recently, Marisa returned to Marivaux with The Isle of Slaves, Revisited, which she directed, translated, and adapted for New York’s FRIGID Fringe Festival.
Her artistic practice is informed by an interdisciplinary background encompassing theatre, film, literature, mythology, music, cultural studies, and education.
Marisa holds an M.A. in Speech and Communication Studies combined with Theater and Film from NYU Steinhardt and a B.A. from NYU Gallatin School of Individualized Study, Paradigms of Life : The Human Condition where her interdisciplinary studies explored the relationship between English, theater, culture, communication, and human experience.
Her earlier work in film and independent production included work with producer Hilary Shor, programming for the DC Independent Film Festival and National Arts Club, participation in the Thessaloniki International Film Festival, and work as Co-Executive Producer of Astoria.
As an educator and teaching artist, Marisa has worked across theatre, English-language learning, literature, and interdisciplinary arts education. She believes theatre can provide young people—particularly those moving between languages, cultures, and identities—with a place to discover and articulate their own creative voices.
ARTISTIC VISION
Evicted Victorius is interested in stories that survive.
Stories carried across generations and cultures .
Stories translated from one language into another.
Stories inherited from mothers, grandmothers, cultures, myths, books, and forgotten histories.
We are particularly drawn to classical works because they are not museum pieces. They remain alive precisely because every generation must encounter them again.
Translation, adaptation, music, movement, and devised performance become ways of opening those stories rather than preserving them behind glass.
The goal is not simply to reproduce the past.
It is to enter into conversation with it.

Circe’s Fire
An original theatrical work created by Marisa Stefatos.
Drawing upon Greek mythology, ancestral memory, music, ritual, and contemporary storytelling, Circe’s Fire explores women whose stories have been inherited through myth—and the voices that may still remain beneath the versions we have been given.
Circe, Persephone, the Fates, and other mythic figures inhabit a theatrical landscape in which memory moves across generations and the boundaries between past and present, living and dead, inherited story and personal experience begin to dissolve.
Through original text, music, movement, and image, Circe’s Fire asks:
What do we inherit from the women who came before us—and what happens when we finally sing the songs they were unable to sing?

THEATRE & EDUCATION
For Evicted Victorius, education and professional artistic practice are not separate worlds.
The rehearsal room and classroom can both become laboratories for imagination.
Marisa’s work as an educator draws upon theatre, literature, mythology, film, music, movement, and multilingual storytelling to help students develop confidence in their own voices.
Her teaching practice is particularly interested in students navigating different languages and cultural identities, and in creating theatrical spaces where those experiences become artistic resources rather than limitations.
Students are encouraged not simply to interpret stories—but to enter them, question them, transform them, and eventually create stories of their own.
