The Isle of Slaves Revisited is a 50- minute immersive adaptation of Pierre de Marivaux’s classic dark comedy presented at the Frigid Fringe Theater Festival at the Rat Theater in Dumbo, Brooklyn. Directed, translated, adapted by Marisa Stefatos and further developed by Evicted Victorius productions, this spectacle explores power and social hierarchy through a restrained, contemporary lens. Performers inhabit an island where two servants and two masters exchange roles in a formal process of reflection, a game of sorts and moral reckoning. This is all done using the playful dialogue often referred to as Marivauxdage by Marivaux enthusaists and scholars. With an emphasis on clarity and economy, clowning and dark humor this production (IOSR) employs minimal design and direct address to foreground language and performance. Audiences serve as witnesses to transformation .

Marisa dedicates this production to the late Anne Deneys-Tunney, a director she collaborated with who introduced her to the magical, complex world of Marivaux and French Theater and to those who have been oppressed and marginalized in the past and present.

Founder and director Marisa Stefatos is a New York based theater director, producer, teaching artist and educator whose work spans classical theatre, immersive performance and socially engaged storytelling.A graduate of NYU’s Gallatin school, she has spent over two decades directing teaching and producing theatre and interdisciplinary performance in New York City.

Directing and producing work includes productions of Antigone, Rhesos, The Infernal Machine, A Midsummer Nights Dream. Shakespeare’s Comedies, La Dispute, Women on the Verge, Paradise Reimagined , Narcisse (production director), Vampyre’s Lair an immersive production a which she wrote and directed for the Guggenheim Estate and the internationally focused Upstander Bystander:From Camp to Camp, which she adapted, translated and produced. Her work frequently explores theatre as a space for empathy, learning, social inquiry and change, and cultural dialogue.
